- The Foreign Ministry is addressing the situation of the missing 17-year-old Russian woman in Mexico. What is known
The Mexican authorities refuse to return the minor Kristina Romanova to Russia and have closed consular access to her. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The position of diplomats
Yakov Fedorov, head of the consular department at the Russian Embassy in Mexico, said that Mexican partners have not provided diplomats with access to the girl since August 2025. According to him, appeals to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office of the country remain without due attention, which violates international procedures.
The diplomat stressed that the detention of a child in a specialized institution of the Mexican Prosecutor General's Office is legally groundless. The embassy has been working on the case since 2023, and Kristina Romanova herself personally asked for assistance in returning to her homeland during the summer meetings with the consuls.
"As of today, the Mexican partners refuse to return Kristina to Russia and have not provided consular access to her since August 2025, and all our appeals to the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the Prosecutor General's Office and other authorities remain without due attention," said Yakov Fedorov.
History of disappearance
Kristina Romanova has been in a shelter in Mexico City since 2023, but she went missing in 2024. She was later found in Tijuana, after which the teenager was transferred to the custody of government agencies in a specialized institution for family and children.
The Russian diplomatic mission said it was keeping the situation under special control, providing support to the girl and her mother. The embassy noted that they use the full range of legal means to protect the rights of Russian citizens and are in constant contact with local authorities.
"The story of Kristina Romanova is very sensitive and painful, as it concerns not only a Russian citizen, but also a minor, and therefore we are keeping this issue under special control and giving it priority attention," the ministry said.
Mother's version
The girl's mother, pianist Marina Romanova, said that her daughter was persuaded to run away from home by an unknown user on a social network. According to her, the acquaintance took place on a communication platform, where the attacker turned the teenager against his parents, calling their care "endless guardianship" and excessive control.
Marina Romanova also expressed concerns about the systemic nature of such incidents in Mexico. She noted that abductions of underage girls in the country occur regularly according to similar scenarios, which may be related to mechanisms of illegal adoption or sale of people.
