Merz called the conflict over Iran "the root cause of problems" in Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the root cause of economic problems in his country is the military operation of the United States and Israel against Iran, adding that the conflict is fraught with long-term consequences that Berlin will not be able to fully compensate. This was reported on April 10 by The Times of Israel l newspaper.
"We cannot compensate for all the consequences on the market [related to the increase in fuel prices as a result of the war in the Middle East] at the expense of public funds. The state cannot absorb all the uncertainty, all the risks, all the upheavals in world politics," the German leader said, announcing measures to support the population in connection with a possible fuel crisis.
Merz noted that the military operation "is the root cause of the problems we face in our own country," and stressed that Berlin is doing everything possible to try to end the conflict.
Against the background of the failure of negotiations and the risk of a new round of escalation, energy prices resumed a sharp rise. On the morning of April 13, Brent crude futures exceeded $100 per barrel. Gas futures prices at TTF, the leading European gas trading hub located in the Netherlands, increased by about 8.5%, reaching €47.3 per megawatt hour.
Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), announced on April 12 that oil prices could reach at least $150 per barrel as early as April 13. According to him, the longer the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the higher oil and gas prices will be, and the energy crisis in the European Union and the United Kingdom will worsen. The recovery period, in turn, will be prolonged.
