The wear of mattresses and pillows is not always noticeable visually, but it can negatively affect the quality of sleep and well-being. This was reported to Izvestia on April 14 by experts of the ORMATEK brand.

"The mattress and pillow wear out imperceptibly. A person gets used to the fact that comfort is gradually decreasing, and does not associate the deterioration of well—being with the condition of the bed, so it is important to focus on the service life specified by the manufacturer, as well as closely monitor body sensations after sleep," explained Svetlana Kotina, senior category manager for ORMATEK mattresses.

According to experts, one of the main signs of wear is a deterioration in well-being: frequent awakenings, feeling tired in the morning, back and neck pain. Prolonged falling asleep and the need to constantly change the position of the body during sleep due to discomfort should also be alerted.

Experts point out that worn-out sleeping accessories can disrupt the proper support of the spine, which over time leads to chronic muscle tension, headaches, and poor posture. In some cases, this can worsen joint problems and contribute to the development of sleep disorders.

Experts explained that the average service life of a mattress is 10-15 years, and a pillow is 2-3 years, but these figures may vary depending on the design and filler. At the same time, even modern models with a multilayer structure lose their supporting properties over time.

The durability of products is affected not only by their quality, but also by the operating conditions. Experts recommend regularly ventilating the sleeping area, using protective covers and washing them in a timely manner. Two—sided mattresses should be turned over every three months, and one—sided mattresses should be periodically swapped in the head-to-legs direction.

"If a foam pad slowly regains its shape after compression, this indicates a decrease in its properties. For printed models, signs of wear are the formation of lumps and uneven distribution of filler," said Marina Vlasova, ORMATEK Pillow Category Manager.

Experts emphasize that even if all the recommendations are followed, sleeping accessories wear out over time. An untimely replacement can not only worsen the quality of sleep, but also negatively affect health, so it is important to regularly assess their condition and update them if necessary.

John Saito, a representative of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, in an interview with Popular Science on March 29, told in which positions one should sleep to achieve maximum health benefits and good rest. Choosing the optimal body position during a night's rest directly depends on individual health and respiratory quality.
