The orthodontist warned about the risks of improper preparation for treatment
Improper preparation for orthodontic treatment can lead to an increase in the duration of therapy and additional costs. On April 14, Emelin Shevchuk, an orthodontist and director of digital diagnostics and clinical support at EUROKAPPA in Russia, told Izvestia about the key risks.
According to the specialist, one of the most common problems remains insufficient diagnosis. Limiting the examination to only an examination or a panoramic image does not allow a full assessment of the condition of the bone tissue, the position of the roots and possible risks. This can lead to inaccuracies in the treatment plan already at the initial stage.
As the expert emphasized, special attention should be paid to the condition of the temporomandibular joint. His dysfunction is not always obvious, but it can affect the course of treatment and require subsequent correction.
"Another possible problem is starting treatment without prior oral sanitation. Caries or gum inflammation can complicate the process and affect the duration of therapy," the doctor noted.
Difficulties also arise at the stage of choosing a strategy. If there is a shortage of space in the dentition, the doctor needs to determine whether to preserve the teeth or resort to removal. An incorrect decision may affect the aesthetic result and require additional interventions.
The expert also added that attempts to correct pronounced skeletal abnormalities exclusively by orthodontic methods do not always have a lasting effect. In some cases, the participation of a maxillofacial surgeon is required.
"A separate risk is associated with attempts to correct complex skeletal abnormalities using orthodontic methods alone. In situations where the participation of a maxillofacial surgeon is required, using only braces or aligners does not provide a stable result and can increase the duration of treatment," she said.
In addition, compliance with the doctor's recommendations affects the result. For example, when using aligners, they must be worn most of the day, otherwise the duration of treatment may increase.
The expert concluded that in some cases, additional orthopedic rehabilitation or implantation may be required after orthodontic treatment, which also affects the final cost.
Orthodontist Andrey Zhuk spoke on April 5 about ways to preserve teeth and avoid installing veneers. The expert emphasized that orthodontic treatment requires an individual approach and strategic planning. The doctor must take into account the characteristics of the patient's body in order to achieve a safe and sustainable result.
