Former British police officer Mark Bullen became the first citizen of the country to be stripped of his passport due to his ties with Russia. The decision was made for reasons of national security, The Sunday Times reported on April 12.

"The letter from the Interior Ministry, published by Bullen, states that the deprivation of citizenship is in the public interest, while the evidence should not be made public in the interests of national security," the newspaper writes.

Bullen, who served for more than ten years in the Hertfordshire County police, lost his citizenship by decision of the head of the British Interior Ministry, Shabana Mahmoud. This measure is usually applied to suspects of terrorism or organized crime. The reason was suspicion of possible activities in the interests of a foreign state. Bullen denies all charges.

In November 2024, he was stopped at Luton Airport, interrogated for four hours, and his electronic devices were seized. During his time in the police, Bullen communicated with his Russian colleagues and completed a month-long internship in St. Petersburg. In social networks, he published materials critical of Ukraine. The Briton has been living in Russia since 2014, is married to a Russian woman, and has four children, but he periodically visited relatives in his homeland.

In October last year, it was reported that President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on the deprivation of citizenship of Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov. This measure also affected ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Oleg Tsarev and ballet dancer Sergei Polunin. It was noted that the decision was made in connection with the alleged presence of all three Russian citizenship.

On the same day, a petition demanding that Trukhanov be stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship collected 25,000 signatures in less than a day, necessary for Zelensky to consider it. It was noted that the authors of the petition rely on information from the Ukrainian media, which claim that Trukhanov allegedly has Russian citizenship, which violates Ukrainian legislation. Trukhanov himself denies having Russian citizenship.

Prior to that, the mayor of Odessa announced that Zelensky would take part in the work of the commission, during which the issue of deprivation of citizenship due to the alleged presence of his Russian passport would be raised. In a video posted on Trukhanov's Telegram channel, he says that since 2014, such threats against him have appeared regularly, and also adds that he considers them as another provocation.
