Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has been appointed editor-in-chief of new school textbooks on social studies for grades 9-11. This was announced on April 10 by Olga Koludarova, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.

"Last year, we asked Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev to act as the editor-in-chief of the textbook line. <...> He responded to our request. Page—by—page comments, suggestions, editing and much more - all this is reflected not only in the final version of the textbook, but also in new federal standards and work programs in social studies," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.

According to Koludarova, professional lawyers, sociologists, economists and historians also worked on the textbooks. In addition, there are university professors, candidates and doctors of sciences among the authors.

On February 22, Russian Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov announced that from September 1, social studies will be taught only to students from 9th to 11th grade, and the subject will be excluded from the 8th grade curriculum. The Minister noted that the preparation of new unified textbooks for high school students has already been completed.

On February 17, after a meeting of the relevant State Duma committee, Kravtsov said that any changes in the education system require careful discussion. He stressed that proposals to reform the school system should be discussed with the teaching community, as classroom teachers play an important organizational role and receive additional payments for their work.
