Gagauzia wants Moldova to be a neutral and non-aligned country with good relations with all its neighbors and major powers, including Russia. In Chisinau, they rely on cooperation with the West. This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by human rights activist, leader of the Council of the people's movement "Gaguz Khalki" Ivan Burguji.

"The Moldovan authorities have adopted regulations that contradict the Constitution and the Law on the Special Status of Gagauzia. Now, under the pretext of these acts, they are trying to twist us and deprive us of our rights. In the end, they want to make our leaders people who will agree to the elimination of autonomy. We are not going to give up. We will hold gatherings of citizens, and an extraordinary congress of representatives of our people is next," he stressed.

Earlier, Gagauz deputies scheduled elections to the National Assembly of the Autonomous Region for June 21. The Moldovan court suspended this decision, explaining that it allegedly contradicts the country's electoral code.

The head of Gagauzia, Yevgenia Hutsul, has been behind bars since August last year. She was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of financing the banned Shor party. The politician pleaded not guilty and appealed the decision. The Chisinau Court of Appeal is expected to deliver its final verdict on May 28.
