A group of Red Book grey partridges has been released into nature in the forests of the Gatchina district of the Leningrad Region. This is the ninth such issue since 2018.

The head of the region, Alexander Drozdenko, said that the authorities, together with the hunting supervision and the state veterinary service, are trying to restore the population of the rare species. So, since the beginning of the program, the number of individuals has been increased from 1 thousand to 4 thousand. These rare birds are well accustomed to new places. They manage to find pairs and hatch the chicks.

According to the expert, these birds spend most of their lives in proud solitude, but once a year they flock to a special place called the tokishche. According to the Committee for the Protection of Wildlife, more than 33 thousand capercaillies live in the Leningrad region. Birds are extremely rare in the Resort area of St. Petersburg and are listed in the Red Book of the Northern Capital.
