Europe must independently build a security system in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) without the United States. This was announced on April 9 by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

"Europe must take responsibility and boldly build the European pillar of the alliance in order, first of all, to guarantee its own security," she said, broadcasting Meloni's speech in the Senate on her YouTube channel.

Thus, the prime minister commented on the visit of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to Washington.

According to her, the European Union (EU) has already made it clear to the United States that it is ready to defend its interests when it responded to the claims of the American leadership on tariffs and Greenland.

On April 1, US President Donald Trump announced that he was seriously considering the US withdrawal from NATO after the alliance refused to help in the conflict with Iran. He added on April 6 that the stain that appeared after the alliance refused to help Washington in the operation against Iran "will never disappear."

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Rutte was announced by White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt. She added that they would discuss Washington's possible withdrawal from NATO. After a discussion at the White House on April 8, Rutte admitted that the US president was disappointed with the North Atlantic Alliance.
