- Matvienko presented state awards to the participants of the SVO in the Kaliningrad region
Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko presented state awards to military personnel participating in a special military operation in the Kaliningrad Region on Thursday, April 9. The solemn meeting was dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the heroic assault and capture of Konigsberg (the current name is Kaliningrad).
The event was attended by Governor Alexey Besprozvannykh, Commander of the Baltic Fleet Admiral Sergey Lipilin, veterans, cadets and family members of the military.
"This is an important reminder to both current and future generations that the history of your region is inextricably linked with the heroic deeds of Soviet soldiers and officers who defeated a powerful Nazi group during the hardest, bloodiest battles for East Prussia and brought our Great Victory closer. Since then, the Kaliningrad Region has forever become an integral part of Russia," Matvienko said.
The Chairman of the Federation Council also congratulated the audience on the 80th anniversary of the region, noting the steady positive dynamics in key indicators. She noted the labor feat of the first generation of Kaliningrad residents who restored the destroyed city in the years after the Great Patriotic War.
Matvienko emphasized the military-strategic importance of the Kaliningrad Region, saying that the heroic double Red Banner Baltic Fleet, which is an outpost of Russia, guarantees the protection of the country's national interests in the Baltic.
Matvienko, who arrived in the Kaliningrad region on a working trip that day, addressed Kaliningrad residents and all Russians with congratulations on the occasion of Konigsberg Day. As the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation recalled, the memorable date of the heroic assault and capture of the fortress city was approved in 2025 by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
