If necessary, NATO could help the coalition developing a strategy for navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This was announced on April 9 by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking at the Ronald Reagan Institute in Washington.

"A coalition of 34 countries, which met at the military level on Tuesday, began to develop detailed plans for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz — who is doing where and what. I think this is the first step. If NATO can help, of course, NATO is here, and there is no reason not to help. We will act if it is useful," he said.

Rutte added that if the alliance's help proves useful, there is no reason not to provide it. He noted that an agreement of all NATO members is required to start providing assistance, and it is also necessary to set deadlines. The Secretary General stressed that if the organization can play a role, it will be very valuable.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump increased pressure on European allies by demanding urgent military support in the Strait of Hormuz. European diplomats called the new demands an ultimatum, given Trump's continued threats to end military support for European NATO allies.

The Reuters news agency reported on April 8 that the Iranian authorities may partially open the Strait of Hormuz next Thursday or Friday, before the start of negotiations with U.S. representatives in Islamabad. It was clarified that in the event of the resumption of navigation, all vessels will necessarily need to coordinate with the Iranian military.
