Irina Litvyakova, cardiologist at the National Research Medical Center "Medical and Rehabilitation Center" of the Russian Ministry of Health, told how acute respiratory viral infections affect the cardiovascular system.

In an interview with the Health Mail on Thursday, April 9, she noted that viral infections can affect not only the respiratory tract, but also the cardiovascular system. This is due to intoxication, systemic inflammation and vascular damage, which increases the load on the heart and can lead to thrombosis and circulatory disorders. In some cases, myocarditis develops — an inflammation of the heart muscle that can occur even after the symptoms of the disease disappear.

Experts note that the alarm signals are chest pain, shortness of breath, heart failure, severe weakness and swelling. If they appear after infection, it is important to consult a doctor, as myocarditis can be latent and lead to serious complications. The elderly and patients with chronic diseases are at risk, but complications are also possible for the young.

Experts emphasize that in order to reduce risks, it is important not to stop prescribed treatment without consulting a doctor, be attentive to the symptoms and undergo examinations after illness. They also recommend flu vaccination, especially for people with cardiovascular diseases, as infection can cause their condition to worsen.

On April 8, general practitioner Olga Titarenko said that flu-like symptoms without a runny nose and cough may indicate borreliosis. She explained that at an early stage, bacteria cause intoxication. The immune system reacts with a standard syndrome similar to SARS, RT notes.

In March, general practitioner Tatiana Romanenko told Moscow 24 that there was no need to rush to open the running season after suffering from acute respiratory viral infections. According to the doctor, it is important to allow the body to recover after an illness: even those who run regularly should take a break for at least two weeks. Then you can start with a brisk walk and gradually return to jogging, increasing the load, notes 360.ru .

At the same time, expert doctor Vera Seryozhina called the dangerous signs of acute respiratory viral infections on the fifth day of illness. In a conversation with Izvestia, she noted that if the temperature persists for more than five days, complications are possible.

Earlier, internist Marina Konstantinova warned of heart problems due to the flu. According to her, after suffering from swine flu, a person's heart muscle and the lining of the heart may become inflamed. Swine flu can cause complications, including pericarditis and myocarditis. The H1N1 virus is also capable of affecting blood vessels, increasing their fragility and the risk of bleeding, writes NSN.
