Viktor Dragavtsev, former director of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after N.I. Vavilov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, died at the age of 91. This was announced on April 9 by the press service of the Vavilov Institute on its website.

It is noted that Dragavtsev died on the night of April 7-8.

"With Viktor Alexandrovich, a whole era is passing away from the life of the VIR, whose interests he defended throughout his 15-year career as director," Elena Khlestkina, director of the Vavilov VIR, is quoted as saying.

Viktor Dragavtsev was born on October 18, 1935 in the Krasnodar Territory. In 1958, he graduated from the Kazakh Agricultural Institute. Dragavtsev was also the head of the Vavilov VIR from 1990 to 2005. Since 2006, he has been the chief researcher at the Laboratory of Ecological Genetics and Breeding of the Department of Light Physiology and Bioproductivity of Agroecosystems of the Federal State Budgetary Budgetary Institution "Agrophysical Research Institute".

In addition, Dragavtsev was a member of many scientific and international organizations, including the European Association of Geneticists and Plant Breeders EUKARPIA, where he represented the CIS countries. The scientist had 530 scientific publications, including 20 monographs and collective monographs, five author's certificates, two patents, he also prepared 35 candidates and 12 doctors of sciences.

In addition, Dragavtsev was awarded awards and medals in the field of science. For example, the academician received the Order of Friendship in 2006, the title of Honored Scientist of Russia in 1996, the Vernadsky Medal, the Vavilov Gold Medal and other awards.
