The doctor explained the relationship between sugar and anxiety
Sweet consumption is not a direct cause of depression, but it can increase anxiety through physiological and behavioral mechanisms. Olga Kushnareva, a doctor, told Izvestia about this on April 9.
"Studies do record a link between high sugar intake and anxiety or depression, but it is indirect. Lifestyle, stress levels, and pre—existing psychological difficulties are often behind this," the expert noted.
Kushnareva explained that fast carbohydrates cause sharp fluctuations in blood glucose levels. A short-term rise in energy is followed by a decline, accompanied by fatigue, irritability, or apathy. With regular repetition of such "swings", stress resistance decreases and concentration worsens.
The doctor also noted that cravings for sweets are often associated with an attempt to cope with stress. Sugar stimulates the production of dopamine, creating a short-term feeling of relief. Over time, a stable behavioral model is formed, in which sweets become a way of emotional self-regulation.
At the same time, it is important to distinguish a regular eating habit from emotional overeating. In the first case, we are talking about a diet, in the second — about trying to cope with negative experiences through food.
The specialist emphasized that a sharp decrease in blood sugar levels can increase anxiety and cause physical symptoms such as weakness and irritability, which a person may perceive as psychological discomfort.
The expert added that the problem cannot be considered in isolation. According to her, the key role is played by the diet, stress level, sleep and the general condition of the body. When they normalize, cravings for sweets tend to decrease without the need for strict restrictions.
On December 4, the journal Science Direct reported that flavanols, special substances found in chocolate, cocoa and berries, can stimulate brain function and improve short—term memory. In addition, they stimulated the body's stress systems, increasing the level of adrenaline and other hormones responsible for alertness and attentiveness.
