- The scientist reported on the risk of collision of two asteroids with the Earth in 110 years
Among the thousands of known near—Earth objects, most do not pose an immediate threat, but two asteroids, Bennu and Ryugu, may collide with Earth in the foreseeable future. This was announced on April 9 by a leading researcher at the Department of Space Ballistics and Mathematical Data Processing at the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) Nathan Eismont told me 5-tv.ru .
"There are only two of them now. These are Bennu and Ryugu. They can get into the Ground in about 110 years," the expert said.
However, according to him, the current calculations should not be a reason for complete calm. Humanity knows only about a third of all existing near-Earth asteroids. In this regard, the real danger to the planet is always higher than current estimates based only on already discovered objects.
"A dangerous asteroid needs to be identified on time, not too late. About two years before hitting the Ground," said a researcher at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On March 27, American geophysicist Gunther Kletechka from the University of Alaska proposed deflecting asteroids with a superconducting magnet. The method is based on the use of the magnetic susceptibility of iron-bearing minerals in S-class asteroids.
