- In the United States, an army veteran was accused of passing classified information to the press
US Army veteran Courtney Williams was charged with passing classified information to a journalist who planned to write a story about the unit in which she served, the Reuters news agency reported on April 9.
"Williams was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly passing classified national defense information to persons not authorized to receive it, including a journalist," the agency quoted an excerpt from a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The soldier informed the journalist about drug trafficking, murders and corruption at the Fort Bragg military base, where she served from 2010 to 2016, the article says.
Among other things, the authors note that although the journalist's name is not mentioned in the case file, it may be a certain Seth Harp, who in 2025 published a book called "The Fort Bragg Cartel: Drug Trafficking and Murders in special forces," and Williams was repeatedly mentioned as a source of information and specific statements were attributed to her.
According to the investigation, the American army veteran and the journalist spent more than 10 hours on the phone and exchanged more than 180 messages. At the same time, it is noted that the ex-serviceman had access to top-level classified information.
Earlier in the day, the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kesh Patel, said that the agency had detained a former employee of the US Special Operations Command, who was suspected of passing classified information to the press. However, he did not disclose the identity of the detainee.
