- The WSJ learned about the US intention to "punish" NATO for refusing to support the operation in Iran
The White House is considering a scenario of "punishing" some NATO members who, according to US President Donald Trump, did not provide adequate support during the operation against Iran. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this with reference to administration representatives on April 9.
"The proposal involves the withdrawal of American troops from member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which are considered not to support military actions against Iran, and their deployment in countries that provide greater support," the publication says.
The authors of the material added that this option is significantly inferior in sharpness to Trump's recent statements about his desire to withdraw from NATO, but they cannot be implemented, since such a decision requires congressional approval, which the president may have problems with.
On April 8, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after meeting with Trump at the White House, admitted that the US president was disappointed with the North Atlantic Alliance.
On April 6, the American leader spoke about saying goodbye to NATO during a period of disagreement with the alliance over Greenland. The US president added that the stain that appeared after the alliance refused to help Washington in the operation against Iran "will never disappear." On April 1, Trump announced that he was seriously considering the US withdrawal from NATO after the alliance refused to help in the conflict with Iran.
