During menstruation, you should consult a doctor if painkillers from the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, diclofenac or ibuprofen, do not relieve pain. Svetlana Khlynova, Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Pirogov University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, told about this on April 9.
"Minor pain during menstruation is acceptable — this is due to substances that are produced to contract the uterus. They are called prostaglandins, and antiprostaglandin drugs are usually used to reduce pain, respectively, a group of nonsteroidal anti—inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)," the expert said during an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
She stressed that the incessant pain during menstruation is a reason to consult a doctor, as it may be associated with various diseases. Menstruation accompanied by pain is called dysmenorrhea, and in its primary stage, elevated prostaglandin levels lead to more severe uterine contractions.
"With secondary dysmenorrhea, pain can be caused by pathologies, including endometriosis, fibroids and other neoplasms in the uterus, chronic inflammation, adhesions in the pelvic region, anatomical features, malformations of the uterus," Khlynova continued.
She explained that if the medications she had drunk did not help, then the cause of the pain could be pathology, and its treatment required an integrated approach.
