American leader Donald Trump, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, could declare his refusal to defend the states of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was reported on April 8 by the British newspaper The Telegraph.

"The president of the United States can make it clear that he will not defend the member states that have been attacked, which will deal a serious blow to the very heart of the alliance," the article says.

It is clarified that Trump is unlikely to be able to completely withdraw the United States from the alliance. For this reason, he can do his best to damage NATO by ignoring Rutte's assurances of loyalty.

On April 6, the American leader spoke about saying goodbye to NATO during a period of disagreement with the alliance over Greenland. The US president also added that the stain that appeared after the alliance refused to help Washington in the operation against Iran "will never disappear."

On April 1, Trump announced that he was seriously considering the US withdrawal from NATO after the alliance refused to help in the conflict with Iran. According to him, the North Atlantic Alliance has never influenced him.
