American mountaineer Jim Whittaker, the first U.S. citizen to climb Mount Everest, has died at the age of 98. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP) on April 9, citing a statement from his family.

"Legendary mountaineer Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mount Everest, died at the age of 97 <...> on Tuesday at his home in Port Townsend, Washington," the publication says.
