Former abbot Sergiy (Nikolai Romanov), convicted of extremism, suicidal tendencies and other crimes, is included in the list of terrorists and extremists in Russia. This was announced on April 8 by the press service of Rosfinmonitoring.

In the spring of 2020, Sergius, during a sermon, urged citizens not to believe in the coronavirus pandemic and abandon security measures. At the end of May, the diocesan authorities banned him from holding services. As a result, he was detained on December 29, 2020.
In January 2023, the Babushkinsky District Court of Moscow found the former schema monk Sergiy guilty of inciting hatred (paragraph "b" of part 2 of Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The defendant was sentenced to 5.5 years in a general regime penal colony. On September 7, 2023, the Moscow City Court reduced the prison term by one month.
