The main risk of hepatitis A infection in flood conditions is associated with a shortage of clean drinking water and violation of sanitary conditions. Andrey Kostechko, a general practitioner at the Yusupov Hospital, told Izvestia on April 8.

"The main routes [of infection] are fecal-oral and aquatic. <...> During emergencies, there is a large shortage of clean drinking water, respectively, infection occurs through water," the specialist noted.

According to the doctor, hepatitis A is an acute infectious disease affecting the liver. The incubation period can range from 15 to 30 days, during which there are no symptoms. After that, the patient may have characteristic symptoms. Among them are fever above 38 degrees, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and right hypochondrium. Later, jaundice develops, manifested by yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes.

As the therapist emphasized, if symptoms appear, you should immediately seek medical help — to a doctor, a paramedic or representatives of emergency services.

Sergei Ryabov, an infectious disease specialist and deputy chief physician of Dubna Hospital, said on March 12 that the hepatitis C virus was discovered only in 1989 and for a long time its nature remained unclear to scientists. The main danger of infection lies in its asymptomatic course, which is why the disease is often detected at late stages.
