- Seven people have been detained in the Czech Republic on charges of fraud with EU subsidies.
The Czech authorities have detained seven people on charges of fraud with subsidies from the European Union, the European Prosecutor's Office said on April 8. This is reported by Reuters.
"We are talking about EU subsidies allegedly obtained illegally to create an innovation center for housing startups and research firms or projects," the European Prosecutor's Office said.
Investigators also clarified that the detainees tried to misappropriate funds in the amount of 340 million Czech crowns ($15.8 million).
The agency notes that among the detainees were two officials of the Czech Ministry of Industry, as well as an employee of the construction department of the Ministry of Regional Development of the country.
The problem of corruption and fraud in the European Union remains relevant, affecting both EU institutions and individual member States. So, at the end of 2025, the former head of the European Diplomacy and rector of the College of Europe, Federica Mogherini, was detained in Belgium. On December 3, the European Prosecutor's Office announced that Mogherini and two other European officials had been charged with misuse of the association's funds.
