Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have no proven harm to human health. Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia on April 12 about the myths about GMOs in products.

According to the expert, soy and products based on it, as well as corn, potatoes and tomatoes, are most often associated with the use of GMOs. In Russia, the cultivation of genetically modified organisms is prohibited, but it is important to keep in mind that finished products can also come from abroad.

"There are other items on store shelves where traces of GMOs are potentially possible," Kashukh said.

She stressed that from the point of view of evidence-based medicine, convincing data on the harm of such products has not yet been received. At the same time, the specialist pointed out that it is also premature to speak unequivocally about complete safety, since such products have been on the market for a relatively short time and require longer observations.

According to the doctor, there is a significant amount of contradictory information around the topic of GMOs, which is related to the interests of various market participants.

"On the one hand, a huge business producing seeds and agricultural crops is interested in promoting its products. On the other hand, organic producers also benefit from popularizing fear of GMOs by selling their products at high margins," she explained.

The expert added that in the absence of evidence of harm, it is not necessary to completely exclude such products from the diet, but it is important to follow the principles of a balanced diet. In conclusion, Kashukh noted that the key principles of a healthy diet remain diversity and moderation, regardless of the origin of the products.

Maxim Chulev, a gastroenterologist at SM Clinic, reported on April 12 that the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract largely depends on lifestyle and daily habits, which often cause functional digestive disorders. According to the expert, one of the most common problems is irregular meals. Long breaks between meals, skipping breakfast and subsequent overeating create excessive stress on the stomach and disrupt its normal functioning.
