The construction industry today is inferior in the competition for young professionals, as it does not have time to adapt to the changed expectations of the new generation. Egor Khalilov, an expert in the field of project management, told Izvestia about this on April 12.

"Outdated perception of the profession remains one of the key reasons for the personnel shortage. Frankly, the construction site has a bad image. Say that you are in IT, and immediately the image of a specialist with a laptop is drawn. Tell them you work at a construction site, and you're already covered in hard hats and dust. Although drones, digital models and modern control tools are used today, there is little talk about this," he said.

The expert stressed that an additional factor is the change in the career expectations of young people. Many expect quick income and results, whereas in construction it takes time to grow and gain experience. At the same time, the working conditions at the facilities, including weather factors and a less comfortable environment, also reduce the attractiveness of the industry.

Khalilov also drew attention to the gap between education and practice. According to him, graduates are often not ready for the real working conditions and do not receive sufficient support.

"A person studied, came to the facility, and on the spot does not understand what is happening at all. Everything turns out to be different in life, with different materials, different deadlines, and a different pace. And yesterday's graduate feels stupid. And there are people with experience standing nearby who don't explain, but just say, "Do it." As a result, the person just leaves," the specialist said.

Among other problems, the expert named an outdated management culture, where a rigid communication style and pressure remain. This, in his opinion, does not meet the expectations of the new generation, for whom respect and understanding of tasks are important.

Khalilov believes that an integrated approach is needed to solve the problem: developing the image of the industry as technologically advanced, improving working conditions, introducing effective training and creating transparent career prospects. According to the expert, the problem now is not the lack of people, but the fact that the industry is not yet ready to meet them.

On April 5, Valentina Romanova, HR Director of the Level Group, said that zoomers continue to change their attitude to work, now they have set a trend for "minimum-wage Mondays." The essence of the trend is to perform only the most basic and urgent tasks on the first day of the week, avoiding meetings and overloads.
