- The analyst stated the threat of the "survival" of the Netanyahu regime due to the truce between the United States and Iran
The terms of the truce between the United States and Iran will be extremely difficult for Israel. Moreover, the ceasefire agreement threatens the "survival" of the Government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Scott Ritter, an ex-intelligence analyst for the United States Marine Corps and a former weapons of mass destruction inspector for the UN Special Commission on Iraq, told Izvestia on April 8.
"The truce does not apply to Iran and Israel. <...> Iran has strategically defeated the United States, and Israel will not be able to continue this struggle alone. Therefore, Israel will have to accept peace on terms that will be extremely difficult politically for the government of Benjamin Netanyahu — and possibly threaten its survival," he said.
The expert added that Washington, after a 40-day war that was not supposed to last more than a week, is in a very difficult situation. The analyst stressed that launching military action was not a necessity, but a choice by the United States. According to him, this war had no specific military goals or objectives to protect national security — the motivation was only to achieve a political result, namely, the collapse of the Iranian regime, but this did not happen.
"The president believed that the Iranian regime was weak, that by killing the supreme leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei], the regime would collapse. Exactly the opposite happened. The Iranian people rallied around their government. <...> Iran won because it had a plan, it was prepared and united. The United States lost because they didn't have a plan, they weren't ready, and they weren't united," Ritter explained.
The expert called the current truce "a complete rejection of Israel by the United States," since Iran will not put up with the Jewish state until it stops its operations against Lebanon and begins to treat the Palestinian population responsibly. In other words, the United States is withdrawing from a conflict that it has unleashed itself, leaving Israel to "pay the price," Ritter concluded.
On April 7, US President Donald Trump announced that he had agreed to suspend strikes on Iran for another two weeks. He explained that the condition for this was the complete unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. The head of the White House said that the United States had received a 10-point proposal from Iran to resolve the conflict. Washington is ready to continue working on its basis.
Later, the SNN TV channel, citing an order from the Supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, reported that negotiations between the United States and Iran on working out the terms of a peace agreement would be held in Islamabad.
