- Nebenzia explained the veto on the draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz
Russia was unable to support the draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz because the text would have set a dangerous precedent for international law. This was announced on April 7 by Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia, speaking about the Russian Federation's veto on the document.
"The Russian Federation could not support a text that would create a dangerous precedent for international law, international maritime law, any peace efforts, as well as the authority of the UN Security Council," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying from a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East.
Nebenzia noted that the purpose of this UN Security Council draft on the Strait of Hormuz was carte blanche to continue aggressive actions. He added that the adoption of a unilateral resolution would jeopardize any prospects for resuming the negotiation process.
In addition, Nebenzia called on Arab and Iranian friends to solve the problem of ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that Russia is ready to assist in this matter.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on April 3 that the draft UN Security Council resolution on Hormuz contains a clause on defensive measures. The minister stressed that the current version of the resolution on the Strait of Hormuz could be used for two purposes: to deliberately disrupt the negotiation process or to legitimize aggressive actions against Iran.
