The death toll from the flood in Dagestan has increased to six
Heavy rains have killed six people in Dagestan, Russian Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov said on April 7 during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the situation in the republic.
"Units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation have rescued more than 200 people. Unfortunately, six people died," the head of the department said.
According to the head of Dagestan Sergey Melikov, the number of victims of the disaster is more than 6.2 thousand people. He also clarified that more than 4 thousand people were evacuated from four residential districts of the Derbent district due to a dam break at the Gejuk reservoir. On April 6, the Investigative Committee of Russia noted that two criminal cases had been opened after the deaths of citizens during transportation in emergency situations in Dagestan.
A source in the region's operational services reported earlier on April 7 that in Dagestan, the number of people poisoned in the village of Karabudakhkentsky district had increased to 76 people, 57 of whom were children. There are 34 patients hospitalized in hospitals.
Due to heavy rainfall on April 5, the Gedzhukhsky reservoir overflowed in Dagestan, as a result of which an earthen rampart was breached. A pregnant woman and a child died after they were swept away by the current. In addition, an apartment building in Makhachkala collapsed.
Also, in the Derbent district of Dagestan, more than 4,000 people were evacuated in four settlements due to a dam break. Most of the evacuees stayed with relatives, while the rest stayed in six specially prepared facilities.
