In Britain, more than $1 billion in benefits were mistakenly paid to the deceased

Since 2021, the British Ministry of Labor and Pensions has mistakenly paid benefits to more than $1 billion to already deceased citizens. This was reported on April 6 by The Telegraph newspaper.

"As a result of a costly mistake, the Ministry of Labor and Pensions paid 850 million pounds (over $1.1 billion) in benefits to recipients after their death," the article says.

According to the publication, 2.6 million errors have been recorded since 2021. It is assumed that they affected unemployment benefits, pensions and payments to people with mental illnesses. The authorities managed to recover less than half of the illegally allocated amount. Overpayments occurred when the death notification was received too late or at the time of the payment itself.
