An automotive Research and Development Center will be opened in St. Petersburg, and its design has already begun. This will be the first R&D center in the field of passenger cars in the north-west of the country, said Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, RIA Novosti reported on April 7.

According to him, the area of the future research and production center will be about 18 thousand square meters. m. 3.1 billion rubles will be invested in the project - funds from the treasury infrastructure loan. The governor noted that "we are talking about a new model for the development of the automotive industry."

Beglov also stressed that in 2026, all car factories previously abandoned by foreign companies, including the site of the former Toyota plant in Shushary, will be restarted in St. Petersburg.

The Saint Petersburg Automobile Plant (formerly Nissan) and the AGR holding company (formerly Hyundai) have already been restarted, and production of new Russian brand Jeland cars will soon begin at the former GM plant. A prototype of one of the Jeland models was shown to Beglov at the end of March, and the city administration published footage of the car.

As it became known on April 2, the first car body of the new Russian brand Jeland was painted at the automobile plant of the AGR holding in Shushary, which underwent a complete technical re-equipment. It was reported on March 20 that the first Jeland car body was welded at the enterprise.
