Russia would consider a request for asylum for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, if such a request is received. This was announced on April 7 by Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergey Melik-Baghdasarov.

"There have been no requests for asylum to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, at least not through us. I think if such an appeal had been received, it would have been carefully considered by the Russian side," the diplomat said in an interview with TASS.

He added that the forcible seizure of the Venezuelan president and his wife contradicts common sense and international law. Melik-Baghdasarov noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry had not yet received requests to grant Maduro asylum.

On March 27, the second court hearing in the case of Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, was held in New York. Then the Venezuelan leader tried to convince a federal judge that the American government was interfering with his defense in a case related to allegations of drug terrorism, and asked to close the case.

In February, Maduro, in a motion to dismiss the criminal case against himself, expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the American authorities, which, according to him, violated his constitutional rights.
