- The media reported that Britain was holding a meeting of experts from 40 countries on Hormuz
On Tuesday, April 7, the United Kingdom will hold a meeting of military experts from 40 countries to discuss options for ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz after the end of hostilities. This was reported on April 6 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
"The UK will host a military planning meeting with more than 40 countries seeking to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz after the end of the war in the Middle East," the publication says.
According to the publication, the participants in the discussion will be representatives of the states that signed a joint statement in March calling on Iran to end threats to shipping. The document called for an immediate halt to the laying of mines, drone strikes and missiles, as well as other attempts to block the strait for commercial vessels.
Initially, the initiative was supported by the leaders of Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Japan. Later, more than 30 more countries joined them, including Australia, Bahrain, the Dominican Republic, Canada, New Zealand, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea.
On the same day, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, Ismail Bagai, said that the Iranian authorities had facilitated the procedure for the movement of vessels of friendly countries through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the diplomat stressed that Tehran would not allow ships that are connected or related to the actions of the United States and Israel against Iran to use the waterway.
CNN reported on April 1 that Iran's continued control of the Strait of Hormuz after the end of the war would be regarded by the international community as a strategic failure by the United States. It is noted that in this scenario, Iran will try to "monetize its new position" by imposing duties on tankers traveling through the strait.
