To grow cherry trees in a suburban area, it is necessary to place an ornamental tree in a non-gilded, illuminated place that will be protected from strong winds. This was announced on April 6 by Marina Tatarenko, a biologist and lecturer at the Department of Teaching Methods of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education.

"In the botanical sense, sakura refers to a whole group of stone fruit crops — more than 11 types of ornamental cherry and plum trees. Their fruits are completely inedible, and they are cultivated solely for the sake of abundant and beautiful white or pink flowers," the expert shared in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

She also noted that the Russian climate allows you to grow many types of cherry trees, and the rules of care are slightly different from plums or cherries. According to Tatarenko, sakura does not tolerate swampy soils due to stagnation of moisture at the roots of the tree, as well as peat soils with an acidic reaction (pH below 5).

"When planting cherry trees in a pit, it is useful to add gravel from calcareous rocks — it helps to reduce acidity," the expert added.

When planting cherry trees in a cottage or backyard, summer residents should give preference to a lighted place, protected from strong and cold winds. Tatarenko called early spring, April, before the beginning of sap flow and budding, the best season for planting this tree. The second most favorable season is autumn, September—October, from four to six weeks before the onset of frost.

"Sakura needs deep and abundant watering, but it is infrequent — the soil must have time to dry out between moistenings. In spring and autumn, the tree needs fertilizing (in spring — with nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers, in autumn — with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers). This helps to maintain its health and abundant flowering for many years," the biologist added.

Nikita Chaplin, State Duma deputy (United Russia faction), chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow region, told Izvestia on April 1 that summer residents need to monitor the schedule and dosage of fertilizers in order to grow a good harvest without harming plants. He specified that the most optimal time for the first feeding is usually the end of March or the beginning of April. Chaplin also pointed out that the quality of fertilizers should be carefully considered.
