Russians have discovered a way to detect a hidden camera using a smartphone

A smartphone can help detect a hidden camera. Andrey Rybnikov, senior lecturer at the Department of Instrumental and Applied Software at RTU MIREA, told about this on Monday, April 6.

"Sometimes the question arises: is it possible to detect a hidden camera without special equipment? A smartphone can help with this check because it combines several tools: a light source and a camera. These functions allow us to identify the characteristic signs of video surveillance devices and pay attention to potentially suspicious elements in the room," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the expert, you can start exploring the space with a simple visual inspection. He noted that the camera captures the image through a glass lens reflecting directional light.

"If you dim the lights and slowly inspect the space with your smartphone's flashlight on, you'll notice the characteristic glare. They can manifest themselves inside objects in which hidden camera placement is technically possible: in decorative elements, wall clocks, smoke detectors, ventilation grilles and other similar structures," he noted.

Rybnikov added that infrared illumination is often used for shooting in low-light conditions. The human eye does not perceive it directly, and the smartphone camera is able to detect such sources. Infrared LEDs can look like small dots of light when viewing a room through a phone screen, especially in a darkened environment.

Also, according to Rybnikov, it makes sense to carefully analyze the design features of the surrounding objects.

"With a detailed examination using a smartphone camera, such features can be identified more confidently than with conventional surveillance," he said.

The specialist added that such a check would not replace professional methods of detecting specialized equipment, but would allow at a basic level to identify indirect signs of hidden cameras.
