The EP predicted Europe's biggest geopolitical loss since the Second World War
Without the support of the United States, European countries do not have the financial or military resources to continue the conflict in Ukraine, and from a geopolitical point of view, the end of the war in Iran does not bode well for them. This was stated on April 6 by Michael von der Schulenburg, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Germany, in an interview with German political scientist and journalist Patrick Baab.
The MEP agreed that the military conflict in the Middle East has quickly become uncontrollable, while the conflict in Ukraine has dragged on and is still ongoing.
"From a European point of view, this means that we are caught between two of the largest conflicts since the end of World War II. The conflicts in Iran and Ukraine are of crucial geostrategic importance. And the worst part is that we both lose. This does not bode well for our future," von der Schulenburg said.
He noted that the Europeans are puzzled and do not know which side's position they should take. At the moment, no one has any solution, and therefore both conflicts will have enormous consequences for the continent. Europe's mistakes are that it got involved in both clashes believing that Russia was not playing the most important role in them.
"We will lose these two largest conflicts since the Second World War, not only because they were initially misjudged: we believed that Russia was an insignificant factor. Without the United States, Europe has neither the financial nor the military resources to continue the conflict [in Ukraine]. We simply do not have such opportunities," the political scientist concluded.
As von der Schulenburg added, there is constant talk in the European Parliament only about the continuation of the conflict, whereas negotiations with Russia should have started a long time ago. However, the leaders of the countries — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer only make empty statements.
"In my opinion, this also indicates an inability to speak in a balanced and responsible manner, which, in turn, is a consequence of the lack of a clear understanding of their own goals and the direction of possible ways out of the current situation. This is a serious problem and a great tragedy for us," the expert noted.
As The Atlantic magazine pointed out on April 5, US President Donald Trump's actions in the Middle East dealt a heavy blow to the European Union (EU). The article notes that the Iranian war helps Russia financially and psychologically, but it damages Ukraine.
