Traveling by electric car in Russia is difficult due to the lack of charging stations. This was stated on April 6 by Senator Artem Sheikin, Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy at the Federation Council, in an interview with TASS.

Sheikin said that he drives an electric car, and once tried to travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow in it. According to him, he overcame this path in about nine hours, whereas in a car with a conventional internal combustion engine the journey would have taken five to six hours.

The senator identified the reason for the problems as a small number of charging stations and queues at them, as well as the charging speed — it takes from an hour to an hour and a half.

The senator explained that for the development of electric transport in Russia, it is necessary to create an appropriate infrastructure. In order for citizens to purchase such cars, they need to understand where they can be charged, he noted.

The network of charging stations for electric vehicles will expand, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said last summer. According to him, thanks to the support measures already taken, there are more than 2 thousand stations for fast charging of electric vehicles in the country. An additional 5.5 billion rubles should be allocated as part of the core national project, so that about 2 thousand more new stations and hubs for electric vehicles will be deployed in the next three years, Mishustin said.

Earlier, on March 18, it was reported that 1,566 new electric vehicles were sold in Russia in the first two months of 2026, which is 23% more than in January-February last year. In the vintage rating, the most popular electric car is the Evolute i-Joy, which is produced in Russia.
