India announced its intention to use snakes and crocodiles to protect the border
The Indian State Border Guard Service has instructed units on the border with Bangladesh to explore the possibility of using snakes and crocodiles in river areas. This was reported on April 6 by the Indian newspaper The Hindu, citing the border agency.
"The possibility of using reptiles (such as snakes or crocodiles) in hard—to-reach border areas should be promptly studied and considered," the publication quotes an excerpt from the document of the Indian Border Guard Service.
At the same time, the representative of the department said that the initiative is still under consideration, as there are a number of problems that do not allow for prompt execution of the order of the central office of the border service. He also noted that it remains unclear exactly how to purchase reptiles and what impact their presence may have on the local population that lives along the rivers.
The newspaper notes that the border between India and Bangladesh is prone to frequent flooding, and the terrain of the area makes it difficult to install physical fences and barriers.
