- The political scientist called the sabotage on the Turkish Stream a blow to the authorities of Serbia and Hungary.
The sabotage of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline is a blow to the authorities of Serbia and Hungary. This was announced by political analyst Andrei Kortunov in an interview with Izvestia on April 5.
"Of course, this would also be a blow to Serbia, since this terrorist act was being prepared on Serbian territory, and accordingly, it called into question the ability of the Serbian leadership to control what is happening on the territory of this country," Kortunov said.
He noted that undermining the pipeline would also have serious economic and political consequences for Hungary. According to the expert, Turkey would be another victim, since a terrorist attack on a section of the gas pipeline would cast doubt on the reliability of not only its Serbian section, but also the entire Turkish Stream.
"It remains to be hoped that the relevant competent authorities from [Serbia] and from Hungary, perhaps, will conduct a thorough investigation and establish the real picture of what was being prepared on this highway," the political scientist stressed.
At the same time, Kortunov drew attention to the political struggle on the eve of the parliamentary elections in Hungary, and the fact that Budapest is the most resolutely defending its sovereignty among the countries of the European Union (EU).
"Naturally, such a terrorist act, if it had been successful, would have dealt a blow to this sovereignty, because in the face of an acute unexpected energy crisis, Hungary would have had to look for some other ways to ensure its energy security and possibly make some very serious political concessions," he added.
On the same day, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic informed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban that explosives and detonators had been found near the gas pipeline connecting the two countries. The Serbian Ministry of Defense noted that explosives were found in the immediate vicinity of a pipeline for transporting Russian gas from Serbia to Hungary.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto noted that the Turkish Stream guarantees the supply of Russian gas to Hungary. He added that the failure of the gas pipeline would force Hungary to buy gas at prices several times higher. The Minister stressed that the section of the gas pipeline in Hungary from Serbia to Slovakia will be taken under the protection of the army.
