The specialist noted that oxalic acid in the body can combine with calcium to form insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which are the main cause of most kidney stones.
"People with urolithiasis, hyperoxaluria (an increased amount of oxalic acid salts in the urine) and other kidney diseases should limit their consumption of spinach or consume it only after heat treatment (cooking reduces the oxalic acid content by 30-87%)," the doctor warned.
The expert clarified that spinach can cause allergies in people with hypersensitivity to vegetable proteins, manifested by itching, swelling and nausea. At the same time, the product remains useful for most people because it is a source of lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that accumulate in the retina of the eye and help protect it from ultraviolet radiation, and can also reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
The gastroenterologist added that spinach contains about 2.2 grams of dietary fiber per 100 grams of product, which support intestinal function, prevent constipation, promote healthy microflora and slow down glucose absorption, which is useful for people with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
On April 4, Varvara Veretyuk, a gastroenterologist and therapist at Invitro, reported that taking large doses of vitamin C is not always justified and may not have the expected effect.
