The expert named the differences between an allergic rhinitis and a cold
People often confuse an allergic rhinitis with a cold, and therefore treatment may be far from effective, but on the contrary harmful to human health. On how to distinguish these types of rhinitis, April 4, Gazeta.Ru" was told by Stanislav Ionov, Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education.
"Allergic rhinitis is always caused by the presence of an allergen. <...> In addition, allergic rhinitis is almost always accompanied by allergic conjunctivitis: the eyelids become inflamed and red, lacrimation appears. In contrast, colds with rhinitis can always be distinguished by three stages: first, the nasal discharge is watery, then it becomes serous, and then purulent," explained Ionov.
In spring, the number of factors that can cause allergies increases due to flowering. Most often, people react to pollen from flowering trees, grasses, and weeds.
The professor added that poplar fluff, which is often considered a powerful allergen, is not in itself something that can cause a reaction. However, the sticky structure of the fluff collects pollen from other plants, which makes it an allergen.
"Antihistamines that do not have a hypnotic effect are used to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. <...> In some situations, drops with hormonal components may be prescribed — there is no risk of addiction when using modern drugs," the expert concluded.
On March 25, Marina Peredelskaya, an allergist and immunologist at the consultative and diagnostic department of the city Clinical Hospital No. 24, reported that freshly squeezed juices from apples and carrots can cause cross-allergy in people with sensitivity to plant pollen. According to her, such drinks also include birch juice and celery smoothie.
