- The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation named the number of people over 100 years old
More than 17,000 people over the age of 100 live in Russia. This was announced on April 4 by Olga Tkacheva, chief freelance geriatrician of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Today, more than 35 million older people live in Russia, and more than 17 thousand Russians have crossed the 100-year mark," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
It is noted that there is a tendency to increase life expectancy in the world. In this regard, people are living in a new demographic reality, which means that the demand for the state and society is changing. So, it is necessary to think more about the prevention of chronic diseases, about education and lifelong development, about accessibility and safety of transport.
Pyotr Lidsky, a Russian virologist and professor at the City University of Hong Kong, said on March 23 that it is impossible to increase the life expectancy of most people to 120 years in the near future, since modern medicine cannot significantly slow down aging. He noted that the growth of life expectancy has slowed down in recent decades, and classical medicine cannot radically slow down aging.
