- The traumatologist spoke about the difference between the symptoms of a bruise and a fracture
An orthopedic traumatologist of the highest category, an arthrologist at SM Clinic, PhD Mikhail Doroshev told on Friday, April 3, how to distinguish a bruise from a fracture when falling from a bicycle or electric scooter.
The doctor told the Mail Health that a bruise and a fracture are very similar in symptoms, but there are signs that will help distinguish them.
Doroshev named the signs of a bruise: severe pain that occurs at the moment of impact, which gradually subsides; swelling that appears quickly, but does not interfere with the movement of fingers or limbs; bruise, but the function of the limb is preserved.
The signs of a fracture are as follows: the arm or leg looks unnaturally bent, the limb "bends" where there is no joint; audible or palpable crunching of bone fragments when trying to move; inability to step on the foot or lean on the arm due to sharp pain; loss of sensitivity below the injury site.
Doroshev noted that if there is at least one of these signs, you should visit a traumatologist as soon as possible.
He named the main rule: no heat in the first 48 hours, as it dilates blood vessels, which increases swelling and inflammation.
In addition, Doroshev announced the rule of the R.I.C.E.: Rest (rest): ensure complete immobility and apply a splint; Ice (ice): attach an ice pack or frozen vegetables, be sure to wrap them in a towel, according to the scheme of 15 minutes hold, 15 minutes break; Compression (pressure): it is necessary to apply an elastic bandage, but do not tighten it too tightly; Elevation: The injured arm or leg should be raised above the level of the heart so that the excess fluid goes away and the swelling decreases.
The traumatologist stressed that it is necessary to call an ambulance in the following situations: a bone is visible or there is a deep wound at the site of deformation; injury to the head, back or pelvis, while the victim should not be moved until the doctors arrive; severe bleeding that does not stop; shock — the victim is pale, covered with cold sweat, breathing frequently or losing consciousness.
At the same time, Doroshev cautioned that you should not warm the injury site or set the bone yourself. This can damage blood vessels and nerves. In addition, he added that alcohol should not be drunk, as this will increase swelling and may interfere with anesthesia if surgery is required.
Earlier, on March 30, Gennady Gordeev, head of the traumatology department of the hospital No. 2 of the Pushkin Clinical Hospital named after Professor V.N. Rozanov, told how to protect yourself from injuries in the spring.
The expert noted that scooters, electric scooters, bicycles and roller skates remain at high risk for children. 360.ru . According to him, strict adult supervision and compliance with the rules of operation remain the main protection. He stressed that even with careful attention, it is impossible to completely eliminate accidents, so monitoring must be constant, RT reports.
