Electric "Landwagens" will be canceled due to the risk of being left without wheels
Mercedes-Benz will recall more than 3,700 G 580 electric SUVs with EQ Technology (the official name of the electric car) in the United States due to the risk that the wheels of cars may come off while driving. This was announced by Carscoops on April 3.
Mercedes-Benz representatives said that the electric "Landwagens" were equipped with wheel bolts that were not properly designed taking into account the increased weight and higher torque of the model. These components were borrowed from the modification of the G-Class with an internal combustion engine. For this reason, the connection between the wheel and the hub may loosen while driving, which increases the risk of an accident.
The company noted that it had discovered a potential problem during the ongoing life tests of the electric G-class. As a result of the investigation, experts concluded that the wheel fastenings are most likely to weaken as a result of "extreme maneuvers combined with frequent wheel replacements." All this can increase the wear on the contact surfaces of the bolts.
A total of 3,734 vehicles were recalled, which were produced from February 26, 2024 to August 19, 2025. Mercedes-Benz will begin notifying car owners of the recall starting on May 22. Dealers will replace the bolts for free with upgraded ones that are better suited to the features of an electric vehicle with high torque. The G580 SUVs, produced since August 26 last year, are already equipped with the same bolts from the factory.
While the fuel-powered G-Class in 2025 showed the best sales in its history (49.7 thousand units), one of the top managers of Mercedes-Benz last year called the electric G580 a "complete failure" due to weak demand. Poor sales prompted Mercedes-Benz to offer significant discounts on the battery-powered SUV. Now its price starts from $164.6 thousand (13.2 million rubles in translation). The model has four electric motors with a total capacity of 587 hp, which make it possible to simulate differential locks and the "tank turn" function.
Earlier, on April 2, it was reported that the BMW model won the title of "World Car of the Year", this victory was the first for the Bavarian brand since 2006. The award went to the BMW iX3 crossover, which was recognized as both the best global car of 2026 and the best electric car in the world. In the finals of the main nomination, iX3 competed with Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf.
