The doctor warned about the danger of chemical dyes for Easter eggs
The use of low-quality dyes in the preparation of Easter eggs can lead to poisoning and allergic reactions. Tatiana Golovchanskaya, a gastroenterologist at the Soft Medical Center clinic, told Izvestia about this on April 3.
"The simplest and most reliable way is to use what is intended for food itself," the specialist noted.
According to her, natural dyes that can be found at home are considered the safest. For example, onion husks give eggs a brown hue, beetroot — pink, and turmeric — yellow. It is also acceptable to use certified food coloring.
The doctor stressed that the use of watercolor, gouache or unknown chemical solutions can be dangerous to health. Such substances are not intended for contact with food and can cause negative reactions. Golovchanskaya explained that if harmful substances get on the skin, irritation and itching may occur, and if they come into contact with mucous membranes, swelling and even difficulty breathing may occur.
In addition, if the dye gets inside the egg through the damaged shell, it can lead to symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
The expert added that people with allergies or sensitive stomachs should be especially careful. If unpleasant symptoms appear after eating colored eggs, it is better to stop using them further.
"The main beacon here is a combination of classic poisoning symptoms. Nausea (sometimes immediately after eating), vomiting, frequent loose stools; plus sometimes weakness and abdominal pain are added," the doctor explained.
In case of deterioration of health, the specialist recommended replenishing fluid loss with rehydration solutions and, if necessary, consult a doctor.
