Turkey is considering raising prices for electricity and natural gas, as a sharp rise in global energy prices may increase the burden of government subsidies. This was reported by Bloomberg on April 3, citing sources.

It is noted that the Turkish government has been subsidizing household electricity and heating bills for several years.

"The price increase may occur as early as April. Discussions on the scale of a possible increase are continuing," the agency cites information received from sources in Ankara.

However, rising utility prices will complicate the Turkish program to combat inflation, which is a priority for the country's leadership against the background of rapid price increases in recent years, the authors of the material note.

The government is also restraining the rise in gasoline and diesel fuel prices through tax adjustments, Bloomberg writes. For example, Ankara recently reinstated the "sliding scale" mechanism (variable fees for goods, services or taxes depending on the financial capabilities of the client), which reduces fuel taxes in order to "significantly limit" the impact on consumer inflation.

The Washington Post reported on March 28 that U.S. allies in Asia fear a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. It was clarified that in addition to the sharp rise in oil and energy prices in Asia, which are already causing significant damage to the economies of the states, the latter are unhappy with the diversion of attention and military resources from the Indo-Pacific region.
