- The expert spoke about the dangers of deepfakes with facial expressions and voice
Generative neural networks are able to reproduce not only a person's appearance, but also their facial expressions, gestures, and behavioral features, which turns deepfakes into a manipulation tool. AI director and entrepreneur Alexey Rykov told Izvestia about this on April 5.
According to him, when creating realistic images and videos, neural networks rely on real data — photos and videos, from which behavioral patterns are extracted.
The expert stressed that such technologies are already actively used by intruders. One of the most common scenarios is video calls with a synthetic face and voice, when scammers pose as acquaintances or relatives.
Rykov added that open content on social networks is also becoming the main source of data for model training. Users actually provide the material themselves to create digital copies of their identity.
"A separate threat is the distribution of fake videos in the public field. Videos featuring famous people can quickly gain an audience, while rebuttals come out later and reach fewer users. In addition, deepfakes are used as a tool of pressure in business and personal conflicts — a few fragments from an open profile are enough to create them," Rykov said.
According to the expert, neural networks allow reproducing the image of a person in almost any context and scale. He also noted that existing deepfake detection tools are limited in efficiency and cannot keep up with the growing number of such videos.
In conclusion, the expert added that in the future it is possible to develop labeling of AI content and strengthen responsibility for its use, as well as the formation of a culture of digital consent. According to him, technology will follow a path similar to the development of the Internet, but faster and with more serious consequences for human identity.
Veronika Akhmetova, a psychologist and member of the Association for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, reported on March 11 that working with artificial intelligence (AI) can cause depression and burnout among employees if interaction with the system is not built correctly. First of all, this is due to the loss of the meaning of work.
