Gattuso resigned after Italy's national team failed to qualify for the World Cup
The head coach of the Italian national football team, Gennaro Gattuso, left his post after the team he was preparing failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. This was announced on April 3 on the website of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
"FIGC and Gennaro Ivan Gattuso, by mutual consent, terminated the contract that bound the coach from Calabria <...> [with] the Italian national team. FIGC thanks Gattuso and his entire team for the seriousness, dedication and passion with which they have worked over the past nine months, and wishes them the best success in continuing their careers," the text says.
The ex-coach himself, commenting on what was happening, "with pain in his heart" admitted that the goals set for him had not been achieved. He considered his experience in the national team to be complete. In his speech, a fragment of which was quoted in the FIGC statement, Gattuso expressed gratitude to the fans who supported his players and expressed their love for them.
On March 31, the Italian team, which lost to the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina, did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the third time in a row. Fabio Capello, the former head coach of the Russian national football team, called the news "a disgrace and a tragedy" the next day. The experience of his compatriots, according to the former coach, was so disturbing that he could not sleep all night.
