Memory loss and absent-mindedness are not always associated with age and may indicate reversible disorders in the body. Nikita Guryanov, an expert doctor at the LabQuest medical company, told Izvestia on April 6.

"Memory impairment does not always mean irreversible age-related changes. Sometimes this is a symptom that can still be reversed if you understand in time what exactly prevents the brain from working normally. Forgetfulness often develops gradually under the influence of external and internal factors. The key role is played by impaired energy supply to the brain, lack of oxygen, vitamins and trace elements, as well as impaired blood flow. In such conditions, the speed of information processing decreases and the formation of new memories worsens," the specialist noted.

The expert added that chronic sleep deprivation, in particular obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, has a serious impact on cognitive functions. At the same time, a person may not be aware of the problem, despite regular fatigue and a feeling of fog in his head. Another common cause is vitamin B12 and iron deficiency, which slows down the nervous system and impairs concentration.

Guryanov also drew attention to the effects of medications. According to him, prolonged and uncontrolled intake of certain drugs can suppress cognitive functions and cause persistent memory loss, which is often mistakenly perceived as an age-related change.

At the same time, the expert stressed that it is important to distinguish temporary forgetfulness from a pathological condition. If problems begin to affect daily life, accompanied by disorientation, apathy, or personality changes, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

The specialist noted that the diagnosis should begin with the search for reversible causes, including an analysis of the level of vitamins, hormones and vascular conditions. According to him, eliminating factors such as deficits, sleep disorders, or drug stress can significantly improve cognitive function without the need for serious treatment.

Neuroscientist Christian Jarrett explained in Science Focus on March 29 which six daily habits help maintain cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia with age. Social activity is the most effective way to train your brain, surpassing any computer program. Jarrett recommends seeking out communication whenever possible, including through volunteering or participating in discussion clubs.
