Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi discussed over the phone the situation in the Middle East and measures taken by a number of countries to de-escalate tensions. This was announced on April 2 by the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The ministers discussed in detail the development of the situation around the new conflict in the Middle East, the efforts being made by a number of states to de—escalate tensions, and exchanged views on the discussions at the UN Security Council on ways to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The press service added that the diplomats also discussed the long-term consequences of the current crisis. The Foreign Ministry stressed that the phone call took place on the initiative of the Iranian side.

Araqchi said on March 31 that Iran was not seeking a "cease-fire," but was demanding an end to wars throughout the Middle East. It is noted that the conditions of peace for Tehran are the provision of guarantees that there will be no attacks on Iran, as well as compensation for the damage caused.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said yesterday that US President Donald Trump intends to reach a deal with Iran by April 6. According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, contacts with Iran continue, including through third countries.
