Russia offers the world unique and alternative transport corridors. This was stated on April 2 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, during a speech at the interregional Path to Science conference within the framework of the XVI St. Petersburg International Educational Forum.

He drew attention to the instability in the work of the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz and noted that it is absolutely safe to move cargo through Russia "under the shadow of Russian missiles."

"You have Southeast Asia, China, India, all these parts, Iran is the workshop of the world. And the main market is the United States, Europe and, there, Africa. And we are actually the connective tissue between them. <...> We offer the world an alternative unique way [of transportation]," Kovalchuk said.

The scientist noted that Russia already has a developed European part in terms of transport, where goods can be moved with ease.

"But now we need to move them like this in the Asian part. And we have unique opportunities. We have the most powerful rivers: Kolyma, Lena, Yenisei, Ob, Irtysh. So now, in fact, these rivers are meridian channels for connecting the north with the south. You can go this way, you can go this way. And you can imagine what prospects our country has," concluded Kovalchuk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on March 31 that Russia would continue to improve the safety of navigation on the Northern Sea Route. The President noted that new changes in the transport industry should have a positive impact on the entire economy of the country.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 12 that Russia still retains interest in the North–South corridor project, despite the unfolding conflict in the Middle East. He added that Moscow expects this project to be implemented further and eventually come to life.
